• Today PansarPost is using a third party provider for SMTP services. That means that all mails that you send, that are not destined for another PansarPost user, will go through our providers systems (mail to PansarPost users never leave our servers).
  • Why? As a growing business, this gives us higher availability when it comes to delivery of all of your email.
  • Many users are using other email providers that are not as strict as we are when it comes to integrity, and as such, you must still encrypt your emails if you want to be sure that they are not processed in their providers systems.
  • We are working towards a solution where we host our own SMTP servers and only use a third party provider if the user opts in to use it.
  • Finally, if you are sending sensitive content, you yourself should always take responsibility and appropriate security measures. For instance, you could encrypt the content of your email using OpenPGP. This would make this a non-issue and provide you with better security than any email provider ever could. And if that still is not secure enough, you should probably not use email for that communication.

• Email data (body & attachments) are always stored in encrypted form.
• The data is encrypted using elliptic curve encryption using the secp521r1 key curve.
• Every user has a separate private key for encryption, and this key is encrypted using openssl and only accessible with the users password.
  • OpenSSL is used to encrypt the keys using AES-256 encryption.
  • User keys are indexed anonymously using a SHA256 hash generated from a per user unique random salt, their username and password. As such:

    SHA256(CONCAT(user_private_key_salt, user_password, user_email))

    Storing the keys anonymously like this add an extra layer of protection. In the event that the database storing the keys is compromised, there will be no way for an attacker to determine which key belongs to any specific user. Thus making the process of an attack targeted against a specific user significantly more complex.
• On our servers, we obfuscate the mail directories of our users (hasing the email address), so that no administrator will not be able to tell which mail directory that belongs to which user. This help protect showing how much storage and number of mails a user has, in case an admin would be performing maintenance on the server.
